HI all,
Well I have spent this afternoon out with the camera photographing a few places local to me. The first place being the historic Tangmere Airfield where the spitfires once flew, then around the corner you have the old West Sussex Fire Station.

Forgotten Chichester

Posted in Old Live Journal, Uncategorized on July 22nd, 2007 by Jonathan

Hi all,
well not to be down beaten by the weather in the rest of the UK I and Rusty have been out enjoy the lovely sunshine.

I headed up to the old Graylingwell Hospital to see if I could enter the site and get some shots of the inside of the building, but sadly the building is now heavily guarded by security personnel with the smiles of a Rottweiler!

Not was all a miss, I managed to get some shots of the outside of some of the buildings, Rusty made another new friend and I met two very nice chaps from the Bognor Regis Camera Club who were on the same mission, with any luck we are going to team up and storm the building (with permission from the owners of course)

In one way it’s sad to see these places to go like this, but on the other hand if they didn’t people like myself and others wouldn’t be keen to photograph them so mucj if they were all new.

Enjoy, more coming soon, and the website for me and Rusty’s website are coming soon, as well some books (hopefully)

Take care

Life, computers and the Uk

Posted in Old Live Journal, Uncategorized on July 18th, 2007 by Jonathan

OK so I am back and have been for nearly a week, so what’s it like? Well in the UK I have noticed they drive on the other side of the road!
My car doesn’t have automatic gears and I found myself confused to what the third pedal in the car did, until I stalled it at a round-about!
I have notice the lack of air conditioning my car has and the price of fuel seems to be some what higher.

To top all that my new hard drive I bought in Salt Lake City which has the contents of my trip on it has decided to not work! so All the RAW format of my trip is now in the hands of a data recovery unit in Epsom! I know what your thinking about that.

Some things are the same, like the weather here at the moment is the same as it in Texas, pouring down with rain and flooding places.

You will all be please to know that Rusty, my mate the chair is having his own website, the start of it will be up and running very shortly and I will post the link for all of you Rusty fans out there. I am also working on putting together some books, one mainly about the trip and the others about Rusty, a whole series about the chair.

Well that’s it for me, I’m going to get back to a nice cup of English TEA!

Two Months Off (the final)

Posted in Old Live Journal on July 10th, 2007 by Jonathan

Hi all,
well as you may or may not know it’s my last day of my trip before I leave (sob sob)
It’s been a crazy trip with ups and downs but on the whole I have enjoyed it.
Before I post the last of the photographs for this trip I would like to thank a few people.
My Mum & Dad for there support, my brother Ian, my sister Suzanne, Jenni for all her help and information, Wayne H for his chats and information, all the people who I have met along the way, all the people that have helped me out. You have all been great, if your name hasn’t been mention here don’t feel sorry for yourself and feel left out, you all all important, it’s just I would have a very long list of thanks.

I would also like to thank some of my unofficial sponsors (if any company or person out there would like to help out in any way with the next one then please contact me via my email that is listed in the user info section or just post a comment an I will get back to you)

Berghaus for keep dry and warm.

Brasher footwear for keeping my feet all snug.

The North Face for my lovely convertible trousers.

Canon for the most excellent camera equipment in the world.

Manfrotto for keeping my camera on a steady path.

Lynx for keeping me nice and clean.

Victorinox for my lovely penknife that has helped out in a few tricky situations.

Mountain Khakis, esp. Garrett for helping me out out

Colgate for keeping my teeth nice and clean.

Jessops for anything photographic related.

Lee Filters for making the best filters in the world.

After my little trip to South Dakota I asked if you wanted to see Mount Rushmore at Night or Rusty Rushmore, well I have decided to post both for you, it’s not fair on the all the people who might not get to see either one of them so here they are:

Mount Rushmore (at night)

Rusty Rushmore

So I know your asking in the back of your minds “what has he been up to in the last few days” well to be honest, not a lot, mainly sorting a few things out, getting some stuff to package Rusty up in, a little bit of shopping, photographing Rusty in a few places (mainly the Hollywood sign and Hollywood Blvd) I’ve found L.A. a bit disappointing, but I knew that before I arrived.
To sum L.A. I would have to say it is a place full of the most crazy drivers in the world, full of people who are either here to try and be famous or just want to spot some famous people, in my eyes we are all famous, these stars are no different to you and me, well except they have a bit more money and few flash houses and cars here and there, but are they happy? can they just pop down to the local store and get a snack with out being hassled or mobed? Hope is the answer.

Today’s findings:

Rusty with his fav hard boy actor Bruce Lee.

Skared?

Well, that’s it for L.A. not much I know but some photographs are being kept under wraps for later, the weather today is poor!

Some stats for you:

I have driven just under 10,000 miles in just under two months.
I have taken 5904 photographs, OK some or those are different exposures of the same thing, some I have gone on to repeat with or without a polarizing filter, some I had repeated the same subject from different angles, you get the idea.

I hope you have enjoyed the show, I will back here on LJ for future projects, information to keep you up to speed with what I have been up to and what I am planning, for those who do not have an LJ account I will email mail if I have your address, all others will have have to check in from time to time to find out.

You have been a great audience, thanks for viewing and thanks for all your comments either on LJ or by email,

THANK YOU.

Jonathan Fridlington.

Two Months Off

Well I have made to L.A. the drive here was crazy, when you hit the outside L.A. the freeway becomes a NASCAR race track! drivers going in and out of spaces that you really can’t fit a car into!

I’ve spent most of my time wondering and driving around trying to find locations that I wanted to photograph and with much disappointment I haven’t found many, they have either disappeared or been pulled down! You can’t walk up to the Hollywood sign any more (didn’t seem to stop some people)

I would like to officially apologize to Jenni for missing today’s USA premier of Harry Potter that happened just down the road on Hollywood! sorry! I did bump into Samuel Jackson in the local gas station! (just kidding)

I did however see the making of the most unusual advertising ever, an airplane writing in the sky “UNDERDOG” advertising the new UNDERDOG movie coming out in the summer.

Underdog the movie (sorry I couldn’t fit it all in, and the first part was disappearing anyway)

Hollywood sign (light in the wrong place, going back tomorrow morning for a better shot)

Well that wraps it for today, sorry not much for you to view but as I said before I have spent most of the day in the car or walking.

I hope someone out there can help out with my Pulp Fiction junk yard search.

Take care, thank you for viewing.

HELP REQUIRED WITHIN AND FAST

Posted in Old Live Journal, Uncategorized on July 8th, 2007 by Jonathan

I’m seeking help from blog land, I need to find the junk yard where they filmed Pulp Fiction, I know it is in Pacoima area of L.A. but with out driving around for hours I haven’t found anything.
If you have any other great ideas of good movie locations in L.A. let me know ASAP, I’m only here for two more days (Monday 9th and Tuesday 10th) I leave early in the morning on the Wednesday.

Thank you in advance for your help

Jonathan

Note: since posting this I have done a little investigation and found this:

“Z BEST AUTO DISMANTLING” on 9837 San Fernando Road, Pacoima. Could this be the place? and being Z Best, with Z getting a mention in movie? to much of a coincidence?

Two Months Off

Posted in Old Live Journal, Uncategorized on July 7th, 2007 by Jonathan

Hi All, back again.

Life the Universe and Santa Cruz, but I’ll get back to that in a while.

My last image of Frisco:

Mount Davidson (where they filmed a bit of Dirty Harry)

A building in SF, I can’t tell you the name or the street it’s on but I just saw whilst driving and had to stop and photograph it.

Coit Tower

A view from Coit Tower

Gum Wall at Coit Tower

A building at the bottom of Filbert Steps (you must walk up or down the these steps, it’s a great place.

Ok back to today, I left SF and headed for San Jose, my base for Santa Cruz, now I’m not one to moan but I would like to hit Santa Cruz where it hurts, in the wallet! I went there with good intentions of getting some photographs of Rusty on the “Broad walk” where they filmed The Lost Boys, just getting down to the last shot and I was confronted by a security guard (or couldn’t make into the police force so join a security company) who informed me that there were no tripods allowed on the “Broad walk” for SAFETY reasons, asking where the signs were he pointed me in the direction of the office who informed me that it was a matter that I should take up the their publicist because they don’t want people publishing photographs of the Broadwalk without there permission! HAS THE WORLD GONE MAD? I can tell you now you wouldn’t get that The Spanish City in Whitley Bay!
To cut a long story short I was one exposure away from finishing my Rusty by the merry go round shot (or not so merry but it was going round)
You would be please to know that I got all the photographs I wanted and will be posting them here, if the “Broad walk” has a problem with it then they will have to take up with Rusty’s lawyers!
Remember bad publicty is worse than good, and if you ever planned to go to Santa Cruz then at this moment in time I would say don’t bother! (unless I get an apology from the Broadwalk.

Time for my photographs, some of Rusty, but to many otherwise you won’t want to books!

Rusty on the bridge where they jump off in the movie, the bridge isn’t in the middle of nowhere, it’s just to the side of the “Broad walk” and dosen’t have a massive space underneath it just about 15′!

“The Broad walk” from the Beach (tripods OK on the beach!)

Rusty next to the merry go round as featured on the The Lost Boys movie (just before I nearly got busted!

yep you better believe it Deep fried Twinkies (yum) almost as nice as deep fried Mars bars!

Well that’s it for today, I’m off to L.A. shortly, but not before I have checked the area out and may be a bit of retail therapy in the outlets (if I can find anything, most disappointing in the last one I went into)

Take care, thank you for viewing and hope you enjoyed today’s show. (I’ll keep you informed about the “Broad walk” and any comments they have to put to me)

Hi all,
well another day in San Francisco, sorry I didn’t post yesterday I was busy all day at Alcatraz and Angel Island, then I met up with my new friend Michelle from Brighton, we Headed up to the Golden Gate bridge to watch the 4th July fireworks over the bay (what a massive disappointment! I’ve seen better fireworks at a village fate in England!

I would like to thank all the people of the Alcatraz cruises for the lovely trip I had yesterday (http://www.alcatrazcruises.com/) I would also like to thank the staff at Alcatraz for letting me go up to the hospital and photograph it (they don’t normally let people up there during the day! You can see part of the hospital during an evening tour)
I would also like to thank Dab’s for her company tonight, I hope you enjoyed looking at my trip photographs and perhaps inspired you to wonder off around the US at some point?
