Goodwood Festival of Speed – Friday

Posted in Motor sport on July 5th, 2010 by Jonathan

This is the first of 3 reports from the Goodwood Festival of Speed, OK I know it’s finished but having 3 long days and busy evenings of trying to be socialable and recovering from running around I will try to keep it brief and stick to some of the highlights as I would like to start a FOS section on the site at some point.

First of all I’m not going to bore you with stats like how many images I have taken over the weekend or how many litres of water I drank or even how many miles I walked.

My first stop of the day was to check out the F1 area and managed to gain a few shots of Christian Horner (Team Principle of RedBull) & Adrian Newey (Designer (RedBull)

Ferrari F1
Lotus F1

I spent the rest of the day track side photographing various cars from various positions, I won’t include every single car

New enlarger

Posted in Darkroom on April 25th, 2010 by Jonathan

Yesterday I managed a drive up to Wolverhampton to collect my new enlarger, it’s a Durst Modular 70 with colour head. OK so I’m going to be printing black and white but it’s such a lovely machine.

Today I have spent hours trying to locate and buy spares for it as Durst no longer make them, i’ve been quite lucky so far in finding spare glass and lens boards for it but could do with a 6×6 and a 645 masking frame (although I won’t need these as I like to print full frame it would be nice to have them for others to use)

Haven’t managed much more ground works yet but when I do I shall post some more images

New Darkroom

Posted in Darkroom on April 23rd, 2010 by Jonathan

After meeting up with some old college friends a while back and looking through old college work books I got thinking about what I love about photography. My friend Augustus Farmer has some lovely 6×6 images which sparked the recent process.

Recently I bought some second hand darkroom equipment for £50 and most of it was boxed and used! This was shortly followed by a Bronica SQA which again was a bargain.

Going out for the first time with the SQA made me realise what I had been missing, manual focus, manual metering, spending time creating a shot as not to waste film. Digital has a place but I think going back to film will really help me find me feet again and my joy of taking photographs.

Here are some photos (taken on my camera phone) of the recent ground works for the darkroom.

When the works have been completed and I know the darkroom is fully functional and has been tested I shall then be renting time for people to come and use it! Interest has been quite high so far so keep an eye out for further details.

I shall post more images as works progress.

The best of both worlds?

Thanks to my good friend Augustus Farmer I have been looking into setting up a darkroom at home so I can enjoy printing black and white again.

Augustus sent me a link yesterday for a chap who took over DeVere enlargers and on his website he is now selling an enlarger that you can produce darkroom prints from digital files!

You can view the enlarger by clicking here

Wondering Thoughts

Posted in Old School Film Photography on March 22nd, 2010 by Jonathan

I have been sitting here thinking hard about the future of photography and the direction it is heading. Unfortunately it didn’t seem a good direction to me.

There are far to many people out there with 350D’s think they can cut the mustard but in reality they might be able to use a camera but can’t compete with image quality of composition and having a decent eye.

With all this in mind I am strongly thinking about moving away from digital and getting back into film again, something you 350D users might not be able to remember. The fun and joy film gives you is great, nothing like seeing an image pop out of the dev and into the fixer, pure beautiful tones, hand processed with love and care. Nothing can beet having a huge black and white print on your wall knowing that the only machine it ever touch was the factory the paper was made in.

Old romantic? Yes I guess I am in a way but having sold the last of all of my film cameras I’m stuck in a rut that only my greedy bank manger could understand (not that I’m skint)

So where is this all leading? Simple really if you have a nice Hasselblad 6×6 camera stuck in a bag that your not using then please lend it to me! otherwise a nice generous donation to the Jonathan’s wish foundation would be nice. What do you get in return? piles and piles of lovely black and white images, hand printed with love and care (oh and at the same time killing my hands but well worth it!)

On serious note I will be moving back into film hopefully this year and I hope you all get to enjoy the images, I will still use the digital (I didn’t buy a new lens for nothing)

Polaroid 600

Posted in Instant Film on March 19th, 2010 by Jonathan

Well it is finally here in my hand, yes 5 packs of the last ever Polaroid 600!
Polaroid 600

Ok so what is the fascination of Polaroid and why use this expensive no reproducing format? Simple; it’s square, instant and like an old worn out comfy sofa that you love and adored but your don’t want to get rid of!

A company has spent the last 12 months crawling the world for the last ever packs of Polaroid 600, repackaged it and sold the last 1000 packets in just under 1.5 hours from the start of the sale! I think this shows the people at Polaroid got it wrong when they decided to do away with the format and progress to digital.

So if the last packs have been sold and I have only got 50 images to play with why start again? A company called the Impossible project bought the factory from Polaroid and have been working very hard to find every last bit of film and camera to sell as well as set up a new era of instant film.

On the 22nd March 2010 the Ipossible Project will launch a new Black & White 600 instant film with the new colour version following on in the summer (with any luck)

You can keep up to date and purchase other instant film from The Impossible project by clicking here
